Probably not if you're not at Cambridge this year? I did my undergrad up in Scotland and only came to Cambridge to do Part III, so I've only been here since October and most of the people I know tend to be either mathmos or fellow Tit Hall grad students.

Ah, whereas I did the undergrad in Cam and then graduated and left without doing Part III. So presumably we have a lot of mutual friends among the mathmos in our year. Weird, as you say.
Ah, so we just missed each other! *g* And yeah, most of my mathmo friends are actually people who did their undergrad in Cambridge (not sure why considering how many are from outside, it just happened) so that ups the probabilities a bit. Did you do your undergrad in maths, then? What college?
No, I don't think I know Rob - don't think I know any Peterhouse mathmos at all, in fact. I have a bunch of friends from Trinity and know Anett from Magdalen, Jon from St. John's, all the Tit Hall people who stayed on to continue obviously... a bunch from other colleges but I think they're all newcomers, hmm. And subjectwise I'm an algebraist :) Go DPMMS!
Ah, I know Anett. My main friends at John's were Alexander, Gemma and Tom, though I know some of the others a bit. I don't know who stayed on there. Do you know Konrad, Harry and co at Trinity?
Yep, them - Konrad, Harry, Fiachra, Andre, Hiro, David... um I remember now why I wasn't going to list them all because I'm pretty sure I forgot a bunch of people there. So many Trinity mathmos, god. I think I probably know most of the bridge-playing mathmos, although all attempts at teaching me failed and I took revenge by teaching them Doppelkopf, which is a German card game that takes a while to get your head round.
...played once and then went home and cried. :( It is not my type of game; I'm bad at trying to figure out lies and ulterior motives at the best of times and doing it for everything everyone said *really* did my head in. It is fun to watch, though!
I watched several games until I had grasped the basic rules (and I played with a less strict set of rules when I first learnt it), and I found it fun after that, though I can see how tough it is to start, particularly with those guys who play very strictly. It's not an easy game to learn or to teach, but I love it now.
I think it's rather doomed for me, because I'm really beyond terrible at reading body language, tone of voice, implicit meaning, that kind of thing. It's not the way my mind works at all. :/ I did play a similar game at the biweekly board games night - Saboteur - which was a thousand times better because there you based things on actions and what cards they'd been playing rather than talk. So I can see how the idea is really appealing, I just need something to go on that's not "how are they acting in conversation?"
